This week’s question: What is your favorite “mature readers” comic series of all time?
Adam Warren’s ‘Empowered’ is a just a big trick. He makes you think you’re reading a sexy, slightly bondage-y book and then, BAM! you realize that you really want Emp to succeed, avoid all those titillating situations, and prove herself as a superhero. He really is wonderful at writing three-dimensional characters that you care about. Really good-looking three-dimensional characters that you care about.
But my absolute favourite mature title has to be ‘Gypsy’ by Enrico Marini and Thierry Smolderen. Tsagoi the Gypsy is big, loud, and passionate, and he will fight anyone who insults either his sister or his truck. It’s very wish-fulfill-y, but has surprisingly touching moments.
The artist of Gypsy, Marini, is currently doing a really good series called ‘The Scorpion’ about a Simon Templar-ish figure in early-modern Italy who makes his living ‘obtaining’ holy relics. It’s worth a look.
Matt, I often listen to the (censored) podcast while I am making my boy’s breakfast. My two-year-old – who can’t talk yet – has started imitating you… all your growls and laughs and sudden voice-lowerings. It’s really funny because it will stop soon.
Your pal Tom.
