Matt’s Reviews:

Batman: The Long Halloween - The Last Halloween #1

Cover by Tim Sale

Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween #1 of 10
DC Comics

Written by Jeph Loeb
Art by Eduardo Risso
Colors by Dave Stewart
Letters by Richard Starkings
32 pages for $3.99

Solict: Gotham City learns to fear Halloween once more as a terrible event threatens to destroy Jim Gordon’s life and puts Batman and Robin’s teamwork to the test more than ever before. In a city of liars, masked vigilantes, and criminals… can anyone be trusted?

Review: The Last Halloween was the only comic I can recall being actively anxious about reading. Both the Long Halloween and the sequel, Dark Victory, have very special places in my heart and personal collection. Not to mention that, while the order changes, Tim Sale is one of my top 5 favorite Batman artists. Luckily Loeb and the astounding Eduardo Risso capture the spirit and feel of the previous Loeb/Sale bat-stories almost instantly. The story is firmly in Long Halloween canon so if you’ve never read the previous stories now is the time. My only complaint is Risso only has art duties on this first issue and now I need him on a regular bat-book. Paired with Dave Stewert’s colors, the two deliver a perfect homage to Sale’s style with some truly breathtaking pages drenched in black, with characters glowing under the Gotham neon. The Last Halloween put my mind at ease and delivered a great first issue for this ten-part mystery that continues one of the best Batman stories ever printed.

Creepshow Vol. 3 #1

Cover by Martin Morazzo

Creepshow Vol. 3 #1
Image Comics
Written by Chip Zdarsky and James Stokoe
Art by Kagan McLeod and James Stokoe
32 pages for $3.99

Solict: MINISERIES PREMIERE! The Eisner Award-nominated horror anthology is back and CREEPIER than ever, with two all-new stories in every issue from YOUR favorite creators! First, writer CHIP ZDARSKY (Batman) and KAGAN McLEOD (KAPTARA) bring you the terrifying tale of a repressed housewife deciding to take matters into her own hands and rescue her daughter from a local psychedelic cult…but the true terror is not what anyone expects! Then, JAMES STOKOE (Godzilla) introduces a chilling mystery of a severed human hand and the lengths one writer will go to discover the truth… ?

Review: If you had fun with the last Image Creepshow anthology, your sick, twisted horror cravings will surely be satiated with this latest series. Image is loading the book with cool creators telling fun, classic, gory horror stories that harken back to the Tales From the Crypt days with an emphasis on great art. It’s spooky season and if you’re looking for a spooky read, Creepshow #1 is sure to further rot your horror-addled brain. Just don’t watch the 1987 sequel to the movie.
