Detective Comics #1090

Cover by Mikel Janin

Detective Comics #1090
DC Comics
Written by Tom Taylor
Art and colors by Mikel Janin
Letters by Wes Abbott
32 pages for $4.99

Solicit: Long ago, the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne changed Gotham forever. But there is something you never knew about the Dark Knight’s tragic origin, which has been lying in wait to strike at Batman ever since that fateful night in Crime Alley. And now, all these years later, this ghost of Gotham’s past begins to reveal itself. Superstars Tom Taylor and Mikel Janín team up to bring you a Batman tale that will rattle the very foundations of the Dark Knight. Things may never be the same again.

Review: Taylor and Janin’s debut on Detective Comics delivers on the hype and then some. Issue #1090 is a great jumping on point for readers coming over from Nightwing, or for fans that may have fallen away from the series during Ram V’s run. Janin’s gorgeous art is just the icing on the cake.

Iron Man #1

Cover by Yasmine Putri

Iron Man #1
Marvel Comics
Written by Spencer Ackerman
Art by Julius Ohta
Colors by Alex Sinclair
Letters by VC’s Joe Caramanga
Cover by Yasmine Putri
32 pages for $4.99

Solicit: A NEW, BRUTAL ERA BEGINS! Roxxon and AIM team up to take on StarkIron  Unlimited! But they’re ready for the old Tony Stark. This one? He’s a lot angrier than he used to be. Iron Man is going to war! New armor, old enemies, and unbelievable twists abound in this fresh take on a fury-powered Iron Man from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Spencer Ackerman and groundbreaking artist Julius Ohta!

Review: The latest Iron Man relaunch feels very familiar at first, but there’s something new and interesting bubbling up under the surface. Spencer Ackerman embraces the magic of the Marvel Universe and breaks Tony down in a way we haven’t since his first appearance. While it’s sometimes a bit inconsistent, Julius Ohta’s art is a great fit for the armored avenger. Looking forward to more of this.

It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour One-Shot

Cover by Ivan Reis

It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour One-Shot
Image Comics/Ghost Machine
Written by Maytal Zchut
Art by Leila Leiz
Colors by Alex Sinclair
Letters by Rob Leigh
56 pages for $5.99

Solicit: Look thin… or die trying! Eith an impending wedding, Lily needs to lose weight to fit into her wedding dress but struggles to shed some pounds. And what’s worse, her super-thin grandmother relentlessly disparages Lily’s approach, instead lavishing praise upon a quick-fix miracle supplement called Devour, as hawked by the mysterious health guru, Miss Goodbody. But is taking it worth the cost? In this extra-length one-shot nightmare, when it comes to Devour… all you need is one.

Review: The It Happened on Hyde Street one-shots will explore the stories of the victims of the Scorekeeper’s mysterious agents, and Devour is a worthy first installment. I wasn’t too sold on the art here, but that comes down to personal preference rather than a lack of quality. I’m curious to see what the other Hyde Street stories have to offer down the line.

The Hexiles #1

Cover by Joe Bocardo

The Hexiles #1
Mad Cave
Written by Cullen Bunn
Art by Joe Bocardo
Colors by Manoli Martinez
Letters by El Torres

Solicit: From Cullen Bunn(Harrow County, The Sixth Gun, Night Walkers) and Joe Bocardo(Night Walkers) comes a new tale of Hellish familial horror. Jamison Kreel is dead. Six of his children from six mothers are attending the funeral of a father they never met. Each of the children possesses a different infernal power. These powers, though, come at a terrible price…a price Jamison Kreel has placed upon the heads of his offspring. And the demonic debtors have come to collect.

Review: The Hexiles #1 presents a great premise with a bit of an uneven execution. But the art is great and what’s not to love about a group that’s essentially the New Mutants if their powers came from hell instead of the X-Gene? I’ll definitely check out the next issue in December.

Absolute Wonder Woman #1

Cover by Hayden Sherman

*JOE PERMANENT COLLECTION PICK!*
Absolute Wonder Woman #1

DC Comics
Written by Kelly Thompson
Art by Hayden Sherman
Colors by Jordie Bellaire
Letters by Becca Carey
40 pages for $3.99

Solicit: EISNER WINNER KELLY THOMPSON AND BREAKOUT ARTIST HAYDEN SHERMAN REINVENT WONDER WOMAN FROM THE GROUND UP! Without the island paradise… without the sisterhood that shaped her… without a mission of peace… what’s left is the Absolute Amazon!

Review: If the monthly Wonder Woman book has been a drag look no further. Thompson’s script sets up an entirely new origin for Wonder Woman, reassures readers all the touchstones of her character are here, builds a solid mystery and shows her kicking plenty of ass too. Sherman packs the book with huge action panels and the incredible colors of Jordie Bellaire make the whole story glow with history and demonic magic. New fans can jump right in and old ones will still very much recognize this new Amazon Princess. Thompson and Sherman have another absolute winner on their hands.

Godzilla's Monsterpiece Theatre #1

Cover by Tom Scioli

*MATT’S PERMANENT COLLECTION PICK!*
Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre #1 of 3
IDW
By Tom Scioli
48 pages for $6.99

Solicit: Godzilla takes on his greatest foe yet — The Great Gatsby! The year is 1922. Mysterious man of luxury Jay Gatsby throws lavish parties from his palatial Long Island estate, all in hopes of attracting the attention of his love, Daisy Buchanan. But his affair is interrupted as his party attracts the one thing more dangerous than love: Godzilla. Now, Gatsby has no choice but to turn his undying will away from his love of Daisy and onto revenge against the monster who destroyed his home. Come along with Gatsby on the journey of a lifetime in three oversized issues as he combines forces with the greatest men of the 20th century to stop its greatest monster — written and drawn by cult favorite comics creator Tom Scioli (Fantastic Four: Grand Design, Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of the King of Comics).

Review: Tom Scioli proves once again he’s a creator like no other. This time he’s doing it with a Godzilla story featuring a cast of real and fictional literary characters all teaming up to stop the menace of a giant monster. Fans of Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentleman will feel right at home as the Great Gatsby leads his G Force alongside Thomas Edison, Sherlock Holmes, and Jules Verne like you’ve never seen him before. Scioli’s style and single vision can be lost on some but if you love a read packed with surprises that takes the threat of Godzilla very seriously you will have a ton of fun with this comic.

Sectaurs #1

Cover by Dustin Weaver

Sectaurs #1
Oni Press
Written by Dennis Culver
Art by Ramón Bachs
Colors by Manoli Martinez
Letters by Taylor Esposito
40 pages for $3.99

Solicit: In the farthest reaches of the NACELLEVERSE, writer Dennis Culver (Justice League Incarnate) and dazzling artist Ramon Bachs (Star Wars: Bounty Hunters) transport you to the world of the SECTAURS: WARRIORS OF SYMBION! Millenia past, on the distant planet Symbion, a genetic experiment failed, and evolution took a strange turn. The result of this cataclysm? A world where insects can grow to monstrous proportions, and whose inhabitants have taken on the weird and wondrous characteristics of insects themselves! Telepathically bonded in battle, Sectaurs warriors unite with their insect companions in the ultimate fight for survival! Return to the fantastic alien realm of Symbion as the heroes of this classic ‘80s toy line return to forge their legend anew in an all-new series from Oni Press and the Nacelle Company!

Review: The creative team did some homework here and they’re taking the Sectaurs relaunch seriously but the story comes off as one giant info dump. It doesn’t help that names are dropped in every panel and the art seems to rely on simple tropes like attractive smiling characters are good and if you have fangs or a bug head you’re evil. The art doesn’t help the action much either and while the world is fleshed out some messy action and generic characters left this feeling like a free comic you’d get with an action figure. Sectaurs #1 suffers from uneven art, too many characters, and a fairly generic plot.

Amazing Spider-Man #60

Cover by John Romita Jr.

Amazing Spider-Man #60
Marvel Comics
Written by Zeb Wells
Pencils by John Romita Jr.
Inks by Scott Hanna
Colors by Marcio Menyz
Letters by VCs Joe Caramanga
64 pages for $7.99

Solicit: SPECIAL OVERSIZED FINALE! Zeb Wells says goodbye to the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN in style with his collaborators JOHN ROMITA JR., ED McGUINNESS, and some other special surprise guests. When one era ends though, another begins as THE EIGHT DEATHS OF SPIDER-MAN gets a special prelude by JOE KELLY! LEGACY #954!

Review: Zeb Wells run on Amazing had its ups and downs but 60 issues plus the Beyond stuff he wrote before Amazing was relaunched in 2022 is nothing to sneeze at. Wells ties up all of the loose ends I’m aware of and doesn’t seem to interested in laying down any new tracks for incoming writer Joe Kelly to ride on. Romita JR has been hit or miss in the last few years but his Spidey output has been great and this is a nice send-off for this art crew also. The final issues of any run can be tough but Wells gives readers just enough of what was great about his run, the human moments between Peter and May, and the complex levels of Tombstone. The extras were fine bordering on good.  MJ is still Jackpot at the end of her story. Ben Rielly is still crazy Chasm. But the preview of the new storyline seems very interesting.  This is a nice send-off for Wells that may have shaken up Pete’s status quo. We’ll just have to see what Joe Kelly and Mark Buckingham have planned.
