Letters by Richard Starkings & Comicraft’s Tyler Smith
40 pages for $5.99

Solicit: THE FUTURE OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE IS HERE! The future of the Marvel Universe is here as two of the most visionary creators in comic history show you THE WORLD TO COME! The King of Wakanda is DEAD, leaving unguarded the world’s most advanced technology, most precious metal, and a cryptic vault of dark secrets while triggering global conflicts among Marvel’s heroes, villains and mutants. With T’Challa gone, the future of the Marvel 616 Universe will be determined by a final tribal challenge for the Wakandan throne and the mysterious victor who will change Wakanda, and the Marvel Universe, forever. MARVEL KNIGHTS visionary creators JOE QUESADA & CHRISTOPHER PRIEST collaborate on a future of the 616 through the lens of the revolutionary MARVEL KNIGHTS line of books that changed comics as we know it. You do not want to miss this landmark project!

Review: Twenty-seven years ago, Ash co-creators Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti were hired by Marvel to revitalize four of their low-profile properties. Sort of a Heroes Reborn-type situation, but set in the main 616 universe. The result was Marvel Knights, an imprint that changed the face of Marvel Comics forever and turned Daredevil, the Black Panther, the Punisher, and more into superstars. One of the character (and career) defining runs was Black Panther, written by the legendary Christopher Priest and brought to life by an assortment of tremendous artists. Priest turned T’Challa into a vital part of the Marvel U, breathing life into the character in a way that hadn’t been seen since Don MacGregor’s Panther’s Rage in the 70s, and adding elements to the Black Panther mythos that still influence the MCU today.

But now the King is dead, and his death will set a series of events in motion that will send the world into global conflict and change the balance of power on Earth.

Priest slips back into T’Challa’s world effortlessly, bringing his trademark time-jumping writing style with him. The story bounces from the past and the future of the event that ushers in the titular World to Come, but we only get hints about what that could be, and who caused it. But we know that both the what and the who are closely tied to T’Challa’s past. The way Priest teases out the story is extremely effective and compelling, and his dialogue is brilliant.

Joe Quesada has always been a great artist, but over the years, his work has evolved into something remarkable. He renders full backgrounds in every scene, even as the story jumps from the gleaming halls of the royal palace to the perilous cliffs of Warrior Falls to the rain-drenched streets of Paris. His command of drawing figures and action scenes is masterful. Richard Isanove, the color artist from the original Priest series, brings his considerable talents to this series as well, giving each scene its own dreamlike glow.

There’s a pretty wild twist on the final page of Marvel Knights: The World to Come #1, and I have my suspicions about where it will lead. But whatever happens, I’m just thrilled to see that the writer of one of my favorite comic runs of all time has come back to that world without missing a beat, bringing one of the greatest comic artists ever to do it along with him.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1

Cover by Pichelli & Bonvillain

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1
Marvel Comics
Written by Deniz Camp & Cody Ziglar
Art by Jonas Scharf
Colors by Edgar Delgado
Letters by VC’s Cory Petit
32 pages for $5.99

Solicit: MILES MORALES CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A UNIVERSAL COLLISION! Two of today’s most exciting writers, DENIZ CAMP (ULTIMATES) and CODY ZIGLAR (MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN), join forces for an adventure that will change Miles Morales- and the Ultimate Universe – forever! Drawn by rising star JONAS SCHARF, the brilliantly moody artist who brought you ULTIMATE UNIVERSE: ONE YEAR IN and DARK X-MEN… Before The Maker remade Earth-6160, he left Miles Morales the key to reach his new universe…and when Miles’ baby sister, Billie, uses it to travel to the Ultimate Universe, it’s up to Spider-Man to save her! But the Ultimate Universe is never safe for any Spider-Man! When the Spot attacks, Miles will have to team up with an all-new Peter Parker – and that’s just the start of his journey across Earth-6160…

Review: The first event of the new Ultimate Universe hits the ground running as Miles Morales returns to Earth-6160 for the first time since Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars in 2015. But thanks to the Maker, the world he finds himself in now looks nothing like the one he left behind. Camp and Ziglar don’t waste any time bringing Miles together with Hickman’s new Spider-Men, and the trio face a very media synergy-friendly foe. The art by Jonas Scharf, who drew the tragic Ultimate Universe: One Year In one-shot, is weird and fun. His Spideys are wonderfully bizarre and I love his take on the secret cabal that rules the new Ultimate U.

As quickly as the action moves, the issue still feels a little too decompressed. The Spider-Men team-up feels padded, and we really only get a hint of the plot. Miles gets caught up in something created by the Maker and now everyone wants it. That’s it. I might have let that slide if it wasn’t for the price. Marvel expects readers to pay $2 over their standard cover price for no extra pages and the bare minimum amount of story.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1 is a decent read but the story barely gets past the starting block. Charging an extra two bucks because it’s a “Big Event” seems like a pretty greedy move on Marvel’s part.

Matt’s Reviews:

Imperial #1

Cover by Marco Checchetto

Imperial #1
Marvel Comics
Written by Jonathan Hickman
Art by Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello
Colors by Federico Blee
Letters by VC’s Cory Petit
56 pages for $6.99

Solicit: JONATHAN HICKMAN, FEDERICO VICENTINI AND IBAN COELLO TAKE ON THE UNIVERSE! A sweeping Marvel cosmic event! Imperial is a story of intrigue, mysteries and war, which takes place against the backdrop of the formation of new galactic order in the Marvel Universe. Featuring HULKS, BLACK PANTHERS, NOVAS, GUARDIANS and COSMIC KINGS and QUEENS. It’s the must-read book of the summer!

Review: Fans of Jonathan Hickman’s intricate world-building and “wheels within wheels” storytelling may be surprised to discover that Imperial is, at its core, a good old-fashioned murder mystery. It’s set in space—so yes, things get weird—but not in the typically mind-bending way we expect from Hickman. This is Marvel-cosmic fun, with incredible art from two artists whose styles mesh surprisingly well.

Usually, multiple artists are brought in to handle different timelines or flashbacks, but here, Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello tag-team the main story with great effect. They’re supported by colorist Federico Blee, whose palette is slightly washed-out but sharp, adding just the right dusty and violent feel to settings like Sakaar En Nevo.

I was genuinely surprised by how fun and straightforward Hickman’s plot turned out to be, though he still finds time to introduce clever new ideas and revisit obscure cosmic characters—some of whom haven’t been seen since his Fantastic Four run. Amadeus Cho and Star-Lord share some lighthearted banter that keeps the tone light, and Richard Rider’s return as Nova feels like it could finally carry real weight. I even fell for the return-to-Planet Hulk plot twist within two pages of learning the core premise of Imperial.

While Hickman’s X-Men: Krakoa saga may have been overtaken by Marvel editorial, Imperial is only a four-part miniseries (with tie-ins, of course), so I’m hopeful he’ll be allowed to deliver what’s shaping up to be a great cosmic murder mystery. Then again, this is Hickman, so issue two could go completely off the rails.

The Sixth Gun: Road to the Six #0

Cover by Brian Hurtt

The Sixth Gun: Road to the Six #0
Oni Press
Written by Cullen Bunn
Art by Brian Hurtt
Colors by Bill Crabtree
Letters by Crank!
40 pages for $3.99

Solicit: THE ROAD TO THE SIX STARTS HERE! Before The Sixth Gun rages back into existence in this summer’s long-awaited reunion from co-creators Cullen Bunn (The Autumn Kingdom, Ghostlore) and Brian Hurtt (The Midnite Show), bridge the gap between the explosive finale of the landmark original series and the powerful new chapter soon to be written with a self-contained, one-shot prelude featuring three, all-new stories . . . leading directly into The Sixth Gun’s 15th anniversary celebration! A terrible dream lies buried deep in the earth. . . .A powerful dream that the mysterious worldwide cabal of magic users will stop at nothing to realize. With the power of the Six alive in the world, it’s only a matter of time before the weapons are reborn in new hands . . . The return of Bunn and Hurtt’s classic weird Western can’t be stopped. . . A tale of calamitous fate and those who try to resist it.. . . Soon, The Sixth Gun will be reborn!

Review: Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt reunite nearly ten years after the final issue of The Sixth Gun for this one-shot anthology that sets the stage for Volume 2, coming this July. Fans of the original series—and you better believe I’m one—will feel right at home in Bunn’s eerie world. But the first story begins long before the Old West, with a knight in medieval times fighting a hopeless battle. From there, it’s back to thespooky-cowboy-tales and some familiar faces as the creative team lays the groundwork for the new series.

Hurtt effortlessly falls back into telling entire stories with a single panel, paying homage to horror masters like Mike Mignola through small, chilling moments. I can’t say enough about his character design—there’s one in the second story that absolutely blew me away.

The only thing better than a well-crafted comic western is a perfectly creepy supernatural western, and no one does it better than this creative team. Bunn promises this is a perfect jumping-on point for new readers too (go grab those omnibus editions now!), but as I mentioned, if you’re a fan of the first volume, this is must-read comic horror from two masters.
