Joe’s Reviews:

Superman: Lex Luthor Special #1
DC Comics
Written by Joshua Williamson
Art by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira
Colors by Adriano Lucas
Letters by Dave Sharpe
32 pages for $3.99

Solicit: THE RETURN OF LEX LUTHOR? During the battle of the House of Brainiac, Lex Luthor’s memories were wiped clean…but now, after the events of DC All-In Special #1, the world needs Lex to remember his past. There is a key piece of information in Lex’s lost memories that could unlock an epic mystery that plagues Superman and the Justice League! But what if Lex doesn’t want to remember? Would Superman sacrifice Lex’s newfound peace to solve a secret, even if it means the return of Superman’s fiercest rival?

Review: Look, we all know Evil Lex is coming back. DC already announced it for their next Superman event. But I’m gonna miss Good Lex. Williamson and Barrows do a great job making you feel for what Lex is going through, while subtle changes in the art show you what he’s becoming. Barrows and Ferreira are incredible here, especially in the flashback scenes. Opinions might have been mixed on the Superwoman one-shot, but this one is a must-read in my opinion.

Silverhawks #1

Main cover by Lucio Parrillo

Silverhawks #1
Dynamite Entertainment
Written by Ed Brisson
Art by George Kambadais
Colors by Ellie Wright
Letters by Jeff Eckleberry
32 pages for $4.99

Solicit: In the nearby galaxy of Limbo, the deadly mob boss Mon*Star has escaped from his confinement on Penal Planet 10 – and he’s looking to take revenge on everyone who put him there! At the top of that list is Commander Stargazer, the grizzled space cop who personally took Mon*Star down the last time he went on a rampage. To recapture Mon*Star and his gang of super-criminal associates, [Commander] Stargazer must put his retirement on hold and assemble a new team of his famed bionically enhanced law enforcers – the SilverHawks! Recruited from every corner of known space by the Federal Interplanetary Force, the SilverHawks were engineered to be the first line of defense against Limbo’s ruthless agents of chaos. But during Mon*Star’s long incarceration, the program went dormant, and its state-of-the-art tech has drifted towards obsolescence. Now, as they take on the galaxy’s deadliest lawbreakers, Stargazer’s new team of untested cyborgs – including Quicksilver, Bluegrass, Hotwing[?!], Steelwill, Steelheart, and The Copper Kidd – will face the ultimate trial by fire! Rising star writer ED BRISSON (ThunderCats: Apex, The Uncanny X-Men) and acclaimed artist GEORGE KAMBADAIS (Gargoyles, Hercules) open up an all-new entry in the FIF’s legendary case files with SilverHawks #1 – featuring beautifully polished covers from KAMBADAIS, LUCIO PARRILLO, JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG, JAMES STOKOE, IVAN TAO, DECLAN SHALVEY, MANIX, GERALDO BORGES, and DAVID COUSENS!

Review: I LOVED the Silverhawks as a kid so I’ve been waiting for this revival for a long while. Brisson gives us more lore in one issue than I can remember from all 65 episodes of the show. Lots of prologue here as we learn all about this world and the events preceding the first issue, so don’t expect to see the team in action just yet. The serious tone crashes up against some of the sillier concepts a little bit, and Silverhawks #1 moves at a slow pace, but it’s still action packed. I really enjoy Kambadais’s very stylized art. It’s kinetic and exciting to look at. And the tone of the story has aged up to match the readers that were kids when the show debuted. This one delivered for me!

Matt’s Reviews:

The Seasons #1

Cover by Paul Azaceta

The Seasons #1
Image Comics
Written by Rick Remender
Art by Paul Azaceta
Colors by Matheus Lopes
Letters by Rus Wooton
40 pages for $3.99

Solicit: Summer, Winter, Spring, and Autumn are the Seasons Sisters, the daughters of the world-renowned Seasons Detectives. Ten years ago, their famous parents disappeared. Left to raise themselves, the sisters formed an unbreakable bond. Now that bond is tested as the sisters fall prey to sinister forces. The youngest sister, Spring, is the last hope of saving them from a fate worse than death. Will Spring be able to piece her shattered family back together before it’s too late for them all? RICK REMENDER (BLACK SCIENCE) and PAUL AZACETA (OUTCAST) weave an elevated tale of whimsical horror unlike anything ever experienced in comics and it all starts with this double-length premiere issue! Perfect for fans of BOUNDARY-BREAKING HORROR in all forms.

Review: Remender and Azaceta are up to something wild with this first issue and if it wasn’t for the solicit I wouldn’t have any clue what’s going on. Not that you should let that dissuade you because this comic is mesmerizing. This has been called groundbreaking horror and maybe it gets there in issue two but after reading the first issue all I can say is Remender writes a strange, charming, and frenetic story but Azaceta’s art makes it feel like the intro to a timeless fairy tale. I don’t know what’s happening yet but I know I have to read more of The Seasons.

Ripperland #1

Cover by Alessandro Oliveri

Ripperland #1
Dark Horse
Written by Steve Orlando & John Harris Dunning
Art by Alessandro Oliveri
Colors by Francesca Vivaldi
Letters by Fabio Amelia
32 pages for $3.99

Solicit: The year is 2188, and Jack the Ripper has returned to London. For the last century, a shattered post-Brexit England has operated as a massive Victorian theme park in exchange for American military and financial protection. But when an American mogul’s grandson is killed in the heart of London, the delicate status quo is threatened. Is the killer a brilliant maniac? Americans taking advantage of their superior technology? Or the English Underground Resistance, wishing to throw off the yoke of American oppression and re-join the modern world? American Special Agent Jesse Holden and local British Police Detective Edwin Fogg must overcome their clashing ideologies in order to find the truth in the foggy streets of 22nd-century London.

Review: Steve Orlando’s latest edition to Dark Horse’s creator-owned comic line may have the highest Sci-Fi concept yet and that’s taking Dawnrunner into consideration. The premise is asking the reader to accept a lot but it is well executed. There’s the usual great pacing and dialogue we’ve come to expect from Orlando (Harris is a new name for me but props to him too) and Oliveri’s detailed cartooning really sells the Victorian experience. At first I thought Jack the Ripper returning might be a little cliche but I suppose this is a future Victorian theme park so it only makes sense. It’s just a little difficult to believe the whole nation would go along with the plan to become an island whore house but maybe there is more to come in future issues that spells out the entirety of the situation.
