32 pages for $3.99

Solicit: THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS RETURNS WITH A BRAND NEW ONGOING SERIES! The corps is back! And just in time for the deadly new fractured spectrum saga to kick into full gear! Join the newly formed Green Lantern Corps as they head out into the galaxy in order to stop Sorrow and his master from creating a power battery. John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz, Guy Gardner, Jo Mullein, and all your favorite Lanterns are back in the most incredible ensemble cast this side of the cosmos! All brought to you by the great galactic creative team of Jeremy Adams (Green Lantern), Morgan Hampton (Cyborg) and Fernando Pasarin (The Flash)!

Review: Neither one of us loved the Fractured Spectrum one-shot that kicked off this storyline, but Green Lantern Corps #1 is a return to form for both the GL line and the Corps itself. I loved the way the creative team made it feel like an actual police procedural, complete with a frazzled Captain and a tour of the bullpen buzzing with activity. Pasarin is no stranger to this corner of the DCU, so his work is a great fit here. His art is also incredibly detailed, so the backgrounds are full of fun storytelling moments. I’m hoping the focus isn’t always so firmly on the human characters, and it comes off as a bit familiar at times, but this issue still delivered some genuine surprises. I really enjoyed seeing the GLC back in action.

One World Under Doom #1

Cover by Ben Harvey

One World Under Doom #1 (of 9)
Marvel Comics
Written by Ryan North
Art by R.B. Silva
Colors by David Curiel
Letters by VC’s Travis Lanham
40 pages for $5.99

Solicit: Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme – then disappeared behind Latveria’s closed borders. For most, there’s enough going on in the world that Doom’s absence is not a priority, and some time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize it for what it truly was…the calm before the storm. It is a storm that has now arrived. The world has woken up to a new reality: Doctor Doom, Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, has magically taken over every broadcast medium on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World – the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth’s leaders seem to be going along with this. Luckily, whether it’s mind control or Doombots, whatever’s affecting them hasn’t affected Earth’s heroes – and so they quickly form a strike team to stop Doom’s machinations. But will they succeed? And what happens when some begin to welcome their new Emperor with open arms, clamoring for One World Under Doom? Marvel’s biggest and most shocking event ever begins right here with THE RISE OF EMPEROR DOOM #1.

Review: I’ve been really eager for this event to start and, for the most part, One World Under Doom #1 delivers. It’s a bit of a slow burn, as the heroes learn about the extent of Doom’s plans along with the rest of the world, but North does a good job selling us on the lie(?) that Vic’s rule is actually GOOD for humanity. The character voices are pretty spot on, and Doom reminds us that the only good nazi is a dead nazi. Silva’s art is very good, but there’s also something kind of…OFF about it here. Many of the faces have a stiffness to them, and there’s an overreliance on digital effects that I found distracting. That said, this is still a very enjoyable issue and a good kick off to a very…VERY…long event.

Matt’s Reviews:

Bug Wars #1

Cover by Mahmud Asrar

Bug Wars #1
Image Comics
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Mahmud Asrar
Colors by Becca Carey
Letters by Matt Wilson
48 pages for $4.99

Solicit: Slade Slaymaker is a kid from Alabama suddenly lost in a vicious world beyond his imagining, a world of marauding ant armies, spellcasting spider witches, and beetle-riding barbarians. A kingdom of tiny but deadly warriors hidden in his own backyard. The same world that saw his father eaten alive by insects now plunges young Slade into the middle of a brutal Bug War to decide the fate of his family. From the superstar team of writer JASON AARON (SOUTHERN BASTARDS, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Absolute Superman) and artist MAHMUD ASRAR (Conan the Barbarian, X-Men, Batman & Robin) comes the over-sized debut of BUG WARS: BOOK ONE, the first adventure in a sprawling new dark fantasy epic.

Review: Jason Aaron is writing a John Carter of Mars homage in a suburban backyard packed with gore, action, and heart. With superstar artist Mahmud Asrar on art the book couldn’t look better or be more action-packed but the two take the time to flesh out the main character’s family situation that explains why he’s perfect for this adventure and like Carter, uniquely powerful among the other bug world residents. Bur Wars is a great take on a classic unlikely hero transported to an incredible world trope with excellent art that makes the extreme violence look amazing.

Mine Is a Long, Lonesome Grave #1

Cover by Chris Shehan

Mine Is A Long, Lonesome Grave #1
Oni Press
Written by Justin Jordan
Art by Chris Shehan
Colors by Alessandro Santoro
Letters by Micah Myers
40 pages for $4.99

Solicit: Eisner and Harvey Award-nominated writer Justin Jordan (The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, Dead Body Road) and #1 best-selling artist Chris Shehan (House of Slaughter) throw a brass-knuckled gut punch of revenge-horror torn from the forgotten corners of Appalachia, where magic and murder go hand in hand . . . Harley Creed is a bad man. He used to be worse. A violent ex-con with a string of brutal crimes in his past, he only wanted one thing when he finally walked free from prison: to leave Briar Falls, WV, behind and disappear forever. But Harley’s hometown has a strange way of swallowing people whole—call it a consequence of the low-level folk magic that has permeated its darker corners for generations. And now that Harley has returned, pent-up vengeance for his past crimes is about to come roaring back. Somebody has put a hex on him—and Harley has seven days before he dies in twisted, screaming agony. To reverse it, Harley must find and kill his unseen enemy before their curse can reap its terrible end. But in Briar Falls, there’s no shortage of suspects—and Harley is coming for them all. If can’t have peace, at least he can have revenge.

Review: It’s been a while since I’ve seen Jordan on a book but he’s back with a vengeance on this folk-horror story that sees a violent ex-con cursed with seven days to live forced to return to his small town and deal with his past sins. The story is unforgiving, violent, and hauntingly illustrated by Shehan who opens the story with a brutal first few panels that sets the tone for some truly excellent feel-bad storytelling. There’s a sparse, haunting feel to this tale of violent redemption that will probably end in even more pain and beautifully illustrated violence for the main character and anyone who gets in his way.
