New Comics Reviews for Wednesday 2/26!
Hello! Here are our new comics reviews for the week of 2/26/25, featuring Red Hulk, Star Trek: Section 31 – Emperor Born, Jumpscare & Pop Kill!
Joe’s Reviews:

Cover by Danny Luckert
Jumpscare #1
Dark Horse Comics
Written by Cullen Bunn
Art by Danny Luckert
32 pages for $3.99
Solicit: From the co-creator of The Sixth Gun and Harrow County comes a new action horror superhero event that ties into the hit Beyond Mortal series! In a world rife with crime, horror, and bloodshed, Jumpscare is the hero we deserve! Strong, fast, violent, and able to conjure any weapon from any horror movie she’s seen (and she’s seen a lot of horror movies), Jumpscare hacks her way through ne’er-do-wells and monsters alike. Not only is she the bloodiest hero of Empire City-she is the most popular! No wonder her enemies want her dead.
Review: I love Cullen Bunn horror comics and I love superheroes. Jumpscare is a perfect blend of the two. Bunn’s voice for the hero of the series is like a somehow-MORE-demented version of Harley Quinn, without the abusive relationship to a “Damaged” Jared Leto-type. I loved the way Bunn built the story through narrative flashbacks and Jumpscare’s secret origin is very cool. Speaking of cool, her horror-movie-weapon-conjouring powers have a real Guy Gardner: Warrior quality that I obviously appreciated. Danny Luckert’s art is extraordinary. I’ll admit, his cover is what attracted me to the book in the first place, and his dynamic interior art and bold colors deliver gory thrills. I didn’t read the Beyond Mortal graphic novel that this ties into, but considering how much I enjoyed Jumpscare #1, it’s earned a spot on my To-Read list. This issue deserves a spot on yours.

Cover by Geoff Shaw and Marte Gracia
Red Hulk #1
Marvel Comics
Written by Benjamin Percy
Art by Geoff Shaw
Colors by Bryan Valenza
Letters by VC’s Cory Petit
32 pages for $4.99
Solicit: RED HULK RAGES INTO ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM! THUNDERBOLT ROSS – in a cell deep below the ground – is a prisoner of DOCTOR DOOM And he is not alone. Brilliant military, criminal and political minds have been gathered against their will in a prison complex that serves as a “THINK TANK” to help carry out Doom’s plan for global domination. But the RED HULK has other plans! Guest starring MACHINE MAN and DEATHLOK!
Review: Longtime listeners to the show will remember that Matt and I aren’t the biggest fans of Marvel’s uh…(what’s the red equivalent of “Jade Giant”…) Red Rampager? But I have to admit that this was a really pleasant surprise. Doom using Thunderbolt Ross’s military genius to run potential war scenarios is a genius idea on Percy’s part, and I love the budding “Great Escape” forming with the likes of Machine Man and Deathlok. Shaw’s art is always a treat and and his depiction of the Ross’s transformation is GROSS! Red Hulk #1 was a book I picked to pad out my review list for this week, but not only is it pretty damn decent, but it’s a great One World Under Doom tie-in to boot.

Matt’s Reviews:

Cover by Dave Johnson
Pop Kill #1
Mad Cave
Written by Dave Johnson and Jimmy Palmiotti
Art by Juan Santacruz
Colors by Brian Reber
Letters by Sean Konot
32 pages for $6.99
Solicit: Imagine a world where the two dominant and competing Cola companies, each worth billions, are owned by former Siamese twins who are now separated and have grown to hate each other so much they hire assassins, saboteurs, and espionage personnel to meddle with each other on a daily basis. This is the story about brotherly love run afoul, and the people they enlist to do their dirty work.
Review: Looking for a snarky James Bond who’s even more of a sex addict who is forced to operate as a corporate hitman for Big Soda? Pop Kill applies the world of international espionage to two warring soda companies run by evil corporate overlords who used to be conjoined twins. The plot is great, and when the book is reveling in violent action, it’s a lot of fun. The story slows down a bit in the second act when agent John Pyle (the pervy James Bond) is trying to seduce an employee working on a top secret fizz project for the rival soda company, but all in all, Pop Kill is well written with decent art and an incredible cover by Johnson. There wasn’t a character I found myself rooting for other than the pug (I have two of my own), but the premise goes a long way here.

Star Trek: Section 31 – Emperor Born #1
IDW
Written by Alyssa Wong
Art by Megan Levens
Colors by Charlie Kirchoff
Letters by Jodie Troutman
40 pages for $5.99
Solicit: From the pen of Alyssa Wong (Spirit World, Doctor Aphra) and the brush of Megan Levens (Star Trek) comes the exciting single-issue spin-off of the forthcoming Star Trek: Section 31 movie! The issue features Emperor Philippa Georgiou on a brand-new, raucous, and exhilarating adventure.
Review: If you wondered how the alternate-universe evil version of Philippa Georgiou got so mean, then strap in for this flashback one-shot that seems to lead straight into the new streaming movie (I haven’t watched it yet). Wong’s script runs young Philippa through a Hunger Games gamut as she’s tortured and forced to kill other kids vying to be the new Terran Emperor. Levens’s art brings the violence and cruelty of evil-Phillippa’s reality while still maintaining IDW’s house Star Trek style very well. Sadly, the movie’s reviews are not great, so many readers might pass on this one-shot, which is a shame. While I agree that the abrupt end feels more like a tease to force you into the show, if you’re reading this, you probably planned on watching Section 31, too. Even if the reviews are terrible. At least IDW is still putting out quality Star Trek comics.
